Last updated: December 2025
1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how TrailCast ("we", "us", or "the App") collects, uses, and protects your personal information when you use our service.
2. Information We Collect
We collect the following information:
Account Information: Email address, name (if provided), and profile preferences from your authentication provider (Google or Apple)
Location Data: Trail locations you save, including coordinates and terrain information
Custom Location Data: If you add a custom location (e.g., a trail, riding spot, or coordinates not previously in TrailCast), we store the location name (if provided), the geographic coordinates, optional descriptive metadata you enter, and metadata generated by TrailCast about that location (e.g., summary, trail-type classification). This data is treated as shared environmental data, not personal data.
Usage Data: How you interact with the App, including saved preferences and riding style
Device Information: Browser type and basic device information for App functionality
3. How We Use Your Information
We use your information to:
Provide personalized trail condition predictions
Remember your saved locations and preferences
Generate gear recommendations based on conditions
Improve the App's features and accuracy
Send important service updates (if applicable)
4. Data Storage & Security
Your data is stored securely using industry-standard encryption and security practices. We use PostgreSQL databases hosted on secure servers. Authentication is handled by trusted third-party providers (Google/Apple) who maintain their own security standards.
5. Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services:
OpenWeatherMap: For weather data (we send location coordinates only)
OpenAI: For generating trail insights (no personal data shared)
Google/Apple OAuth: For authentication
Amazon Associates: Affiliate links for gear recommendations
6. Cookies & Local Storage
We use browser local storage to remember your preferences (theme, selected dates) and session cookies for authentication. We do not use tracking cookies or analytics that identify individual users.
7. Your Rights
You have the right to:
Access: View your profile and saved data in the App
Update: Modify your profile information at any time
Delete: Permanently delete your account and all associated data
Export: Request a copy of your data by contacting us
8. Data Retention
We retain your data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, all personal data is permanently removed within 30 days. Anonymized, aggregated data may be retained for service improvement.
Custom Locations: Custom locations you add to TrailCast are not deleted, because:
these locations contribute to the core functionality of the App,
they may be used by other users,
they are not considered personal data once separated from your profile.
All identifying links between the location and your account are removed. TrailCast may modify or delete user-submitted locations to improve accuracy, remove duplicates, or maintain quality standards.
9. Children's Privacy
TrailCast is not intended for users under 16 years of age. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 16.
